Team Safety + Vulnerability = Performance

Updated: Nov 8, 2024

Daniel Coyle in his great book “The Culture Code” shares the recurrent signs of performing teams.

Close physical proximity, often in circles

  • Profuse amounts of eye contact

  • Physical touch, handshakes, hugs

  • Lots of shorts and energetic exchanges

  • No long speeches

  • High levels of mixing, everyone talks to everyone

  • Few interruptions

  • Compassion when mistakes are openly raised

  • Lots of questions

  • Intensive active listening

  • No judgment

  • Humor, laughter

  • Small attentive courtesy: thank you’s, opening doors etc. etc.

Creating a psychologically safe environment is an important pre-requisite of teams’ performance.

Members should be at ease in bringing their true self at work, be fearless and allowed to fail (correcting mistakes quickly obviously): evaluated Yes…never judged.

In her inspiring TED Talk, "The Power of Vulnerability," Brené Brown explains how being vulnerable is not a sign of weakness, but a path to deep, meaningful connections.

Encouraging vulnerability within teams can lead to stronger bonds, enhanced trust, and a more cohesive unit.

This openness fosters an environment where innovation, creativity, and adaptability thrive.

Lack of safety and vulnerability increases the possibility of mistakes: walls are mounted among Team members, long Egos are allowed to operate, truth does not come out.

These dynamics work tremendously against team performance.

I run specific workshops on how to create more Safety and Vulnerability in work environments.
